Counteractions/Remedies to Negative tendencies/Difficult situations

This is from a scripture called "Durvasana Prateekara Dasakam" written by the great saint "Shri Vidyaranya". (go and read his extraordinary life). There are multiple versions on the web which are providing detailed explanation of this. But I am creating this to help us in revising the essence.

Problem -> Solution

  1. Ignorance (Agnyanam) -> Self Realisation (Athma Gnyanam)
  2. Determinations (Sankalpas) -> Illusioinary nature of the world (Mithya)
  3. Bad desire (Kama) -> Suffering to achieve it and the result after achieving it. Is it worth?
  4. Anger (Krodam) -> Patience (Kshama)
  5. Jealousy (Lobham) -> Contentment (Santhosham)
  6. Tongue weakness (Zihwa chapalyam) -> Think about the future suffering after eating unhealthy food or talking bad.
  7. Insolence (Paarushyam) -> Sweet words (Mrudhu basha)
  8. Useless talk (Vrudha talk) -> Being silent (Mounam)
  9. Bad company of people (Dussangam) -> Good company of people (Sadhu Sangam)
  10. False prestige (Bala garvam) -> Disgrace (Bangam) will defeat it. Hence, be careful not to develop it.
  11. Pain of false blame (nindha) -> Just think about the great people who are affected by this and provide solace to yourself.
  12. Sleep (nidra) -> Sathvik food
  13. Dream state (Swapna) -> Awakeness/Consciousness (Jagruth)
  14. Disease (Roga) -> Eating easily digestible and balanced amount of food
  15. Despair (Dhainyam) -> Courage (Dhairyam)
  16. Getting into trouble due to association with numerous things and people -> Limiting such associations. Keep only the necessary.
  17. Desire towards opposite gender (Sthree Vaancha) -> Think about the suffering it will cause to your body in the future. Its hard to earn a good name but one bad step will ruin all the reputation.
  18. Sadness (Dukham) -> Think about the real nature of you - Bliss (Sukham)
  19. Interest in money and relations (Moham) -> Thinking about the temporary nature of those things (Anitya)
  20. Cruelity (Naishturyam) -> Compassion (Karuna)
  21. Friend or Foe Dilemma -> Detachment (Udasin)
  22. Mischief of Ten indriyas (5 gnyana indriyas and 5 karma indriyas) -> Being Alone (Ekantham) in a place where the indriyas does not have access to any sense object.
  23. Procastination (Aalas) -> Promptness (Twaraya)
  24. Fatigue from work (Srama) -> Peace (Shanti)
  25. Drowsiness -> Nimbleness
  26. Illusion of Distinction (Bhedha Branthi) -> Vision of the oneness (Abhedha Darsanam)
  27. Two facedness (Narmokthi) -> Being the same in mind, word and deed (Trikarana suddhi)
  28. Disloyalty (Droham) -> Equality (Samya Drushti). By doing something to you, if someone is making you feel bad then don't do the same thing to others. This means to treat you and others equally. This is the finest form of dharma.
  29. Outrage/Outcry (Akrosam) -> Enquiring about well being (Kusalokthi)
  30. Fear (Bhayam) -> Vigilance (Apramattham)
  31. Thinking about past -> Know it as useless pursuit (Vrudha Shrama)
  32. Thinking about present -> The present will become past in future. Hence, stop worrying and just do the right thing.
  33. Thinking about future -> By understanding that our future will depend on past deeds/prarabhdha karma, we can stop worrying about future.
  34. We can leave sukarma dushkarmas by thinking of them as useless suffering.
  35. Attachment and Aversion (Raga Dwesha) - Knowing that everything will end with ashes (Basma Gnyanam)
  36. Seeing faults in everything/everyone -> By knowing your real self - which is pure and without any faults. This is present in everyone and everywhere.
  37. Thinking one is higher, another is lower, etc (Vaishamya Bhavam) - By viewing all beings with equal compassion (Samatvam)
  38. Blaming by others (Dikkarana) - If the blame is true. Then fix it. If it is really false then no need to worry about false statements. (Yogyatha Bhavam)
  39. Blaming by others (Dikkarana) reaction - Forgive them with mercy (Dhaya) and patience (Kshama)
  40. Pain due to wound -> Think that past bad deeds are getting lapsed (Karma kshayam)

The river of time is perennial but not the human body. Human body is obtained as a result of past karma. Hence, to utilise this (hard to get) human body, We need to perform duties as per dharma shastras. Think about the vedantha. Read relevant portions in mahabharatha, yoga vashistham from ramayana and understand the essense of bhagavatam. Also, constantly revise them.

By doing above sadhana which is similar to sagara madhanam, we can get the following fruits:

  1. Courage (Dhairyam - Airavatha),
  2. Peace (Shanthi - Kamadhenu)
  3. Mastery over organs of sense and action (Indriya nigraha - Kalpatharu)
  4. Contentment (Santhosha - Chintamani)
  5. Friendliness, Joy, Compassion and Equanimity(Apsaras named Maithri, Mudhitha, Karuna and Upeksha)
  6. Discrimination between good and bad (Viveka - Vuchhesravam)
  7. Elixir of Self Knowledge (Athma Ghyana Maha Amrutham)
  8. Detachment (Vairagya Chandrodayam)
  9. Liberation (Moksha Lakshmi)
